  1. Samantha L****

Strengths: excellent cultural range, well-researched references, provocative reframing of myths of monogamy. Weaknesses: uneven pacing, especially mid-way. Overall: a necessary corrective to how we think of love in the West.

  2. Robert M****

Overwritten in parts, trying too hard to be profound. The history is fascinating, but the style made me roll my eyes more than once. Worth skimming, not savoring.

  3. Elizabeth W****

So apparently love isn’t just candlelit dinners and Hollywood endings. Who knew? The historical anecdotes made me laugh and also cringe. Honestly, I’ll never look at medieval marriage contracts the same way again.

  4. Kimberly A****

This book basically said: stop pretending love has always looked like Netflix dramas. People used to marry for cows, alliances, survival. Weirdly comforting to know romance is just one version of the story.
